Google has been on a killing spree for some time now. We saw how google pulled the plug for google reader few weeks. For sometime users have been contemplating the end of google feedburner services, an rss feed burner service which has not been performing properly since the last few months. Many users have been complaining about feeds being not delivered and subscribers going missing. But the trouble does not ends here.
Google Alerts – another google service is not working properly either. For those who dont know Google Alerts is system that was developed to get email notifications every time a particular word or phrase is mentioned across the web. Pretty useful for a company or a brand looking to know and understand who is talking what about them. You can monitor specific terms and receive email notifications. Pretty neat, handy and simple system. Google Alerts are incredibly useful for anyone who needs to track discussion and coverage of an individual, company, product, or topic. But lately, they’ve been noticeably unreliable.
Unfortunately it has been a lacking since the last few months and despite many users complaining, no efforts are being taken by google to rectify the problem. Heck they are not even responding. Earlier in the days I used to receive so many mails with multiple results that I was usually backlogged but hey who’s complaining. But nowadays I receive a mail or two daily with much less results. A simple search on google shows much better results but if I were to use google search then what is the purpose of google alerts ?
The Financial Brand, a finance-oriented publication, posted “an open letter to Google” this week in which it declared that Google Alerts were “broken” and “now useless”:
The volume of Alerts has decreased by at least 80 percent, dropping from 20 to 35 emails per day with four to 12 results each down to four to eight emails per day with one to three results each. And the results are crummier than ever.
This is a sign, an indication that another service is on its way to being shut-ted down and we should start looking for alternatives at the earliest. Hope you guys will come up with a solution. I am keeping my eyes and ears open.
